#SpokesMtg report – City Centre Transformation

Latest: Spokes response to the Transformation Proposals consultation.

Almost every one of the 110 chairs was filled at our public meeting on Edinburgh Council’s City Centre Transformation Proposals.

Top theme to emerge from the talks and the hour-long discussion was that the proposals are encouraging and bold – but that they involve a process of ongoing planning, feedback and implementation in which it is vital to keep engaged. The monthly Sunday car-free Open Streets, now underway, are are the very first step.

Yes, it’s a Transformation!

Latest: Spokes Bulletin 134 now out, with special features on the Transformation.

Edinburgh City Council’s long-awaited City Centre Transformation proposals have been published and, perhaps almost unbelievably, they do seem to live up to their name. The Council, and particularly project leader Daisy Narayanan and Transport Convener Cllr Lesley Macinnes, deserve huge credit.

City Centre Transformation, the proposals … June 14 #SpokesMtg

We hope (and expect?) that the Transformation proposals (to be announced in mid-May) will mark a major change of the city centre and its approaches, to a much more pedestrian and bike-friendly place. Our June 14 public meeting will hear the details and early reactions – and give you a chance to have your say and influence how the details develop.

Waverley to Double : have your say!

Network Rail, Edinburgh Council and Transport Scotland are preparing a masterplan to cater for an expected doubling of passengers over the next 30 years. This is likely to be a massive rebuild, so even ideas which might normally appear very costly can be considered.  Don’t miss the chance to have your say!!

Latest on Waverley:  Spokes submission now available on our rail page.
General bike/rail: there’s also a bike/rail update at the end of this article.

#SpokesMtg: Climate/Transport/Cycling

Some main points to emerge from our 110-strong public meeting…

  • The climate is in crisis and action is urgent
  • The crisis embodies many inequities, with greater impacts likely on the young and on poorer people and poorer countries – i.e. those least responsible for causing the crisis
  • Transport is the biggest, and growing, contributor to Scottish and UK emissions.  Substantial modal shift to cycling in urban areas worldwide would have a valuable impact
  • It is important for concerned individuals not only to live in an environmentally responsible way but also to take the personal into the political – speak to friends and colleagues, contact MSPs and attend events which raise awareness
  • Young people are increasingly doing this now, and older people need to take the climate crisis equally seriously. Continue reading #SpokesMtg: Climate/Transport/Cycling

Spokes Bulletin 133 – Climate/Transport/Cycling… is ScotGov serious?

In the last 1-2 years, the Scottish Government has significantly upped its support for cycling.  But … at the same time it is boosting road and air travel, and its forecasts fortell a frightening future… Continue reading Spokes Bulletin 133 – Climate/Transport/Cycling… is ScotGov serious?

#SpokesMtg 20 March – Climate, Transport & Cycling

With increasingly powerful scientific warnings of climate breakdown, with transport now Scotland’s biggest source of climate emissions, with cycle use increasing too slowly, and with a Climate Bill going through the Scottish Parliament, our Spring public meeting will consider the relationship between climate change and transport … from trunk roads to cycling … from national politics to how we commute… Continue reading #SpokesMtg 20 March – Climate, Transport & Cycling

Outlook for 🚲 in 2019 – Edinburgh & Scotland

After a ‘hiatus 2018‘ for active travel in Edinburgh, 2019 looks set to be either the most momentous – or the most disappointing – of recent years.  At Scottish level, the welcome doubling of active travel cash from 2018/19 onwards will start to be reflected on the ground in many towns and cities – but still in a transport context where the government’s top priority is ‘big transport,’ notably climate-damaging trunk road and air travel expansion. Top Tweets 2018: a hiatus year

We list the most popular Spokes tweets from the last 12 months, measured by the number of retweets (RTs).  They reflect a year in which there were no major threats to existing facilities or to existing major cycleroute proposals, but where no significant new cycleroute facilities appeared in the heart of the city either, although much future planning took place and of course there was the launch of Edinburgh’s long-awaited Bike Hire scheme.
